What it is

What an ESA letter actually does

An emotional support animal letter is a signed document from a licensed mental health professional stating that you have an emotional or mental health condition and that your animal provides support that alleviates its symptoms. Under the federal Fair Housing Act, that documentation lets you request a reasonable accommodation from your housing provider.

In practice, a valid letter means most landlords must consider allowing your animal even in "no pets" buildings — and generally can’t charge pet rent, pet fees, or pet deposits for an approved ESA. It applies to apartments, rental homes, most college housing, condos, and HOAs.

Most clients complete everything within 2–3 days: evaluations are usually available within 1–2 days, and letters arrive 24–48 hours after approval. Five states (AR, CA, IA, LA, MT) require a 30-day client relationship — see ESA Laws by State.
